Historically, Cannabis is local plant

In India, the use of cannabis was widely disseminated, both as a medicine and as a recreational drug. Such a broad use may be due to the fact that cannabis maintained a straight association with religion, which assigned sacred virtues to the plant. The Atharva Veda (a collection of sacred texts of unknown author) mentions cannabis as one of five sacred plants, referring to it as a source of happinessdonator of joy and bringer of freedom. Hence, cannabis use became part of numerous religious rituals in this region, China, and Southeast asia. There is a record of Thai royal family during Rama V reign using marijuanna to treat pain, and for pleasure. It was then become popular among the community.

Thai cannabis were introduced to the US by American troops, when they were in Thailand during the
Vietnam War (1955-1975). However, the use of cannabis as a spice in Thailand was currently outlawed,
but still found in provincial markets in the neighboring countries of Laos and Cambodia. The use of marijuana or cannabis can be indirectly traced to the negative cultural impact of Vietnam War, when the soldiers were based in Thailand. The Drug Enforcement Administration’s Intelligence Division in a 2001 report, revealed that Thailand was Southeast Asia’s major cultivator of cannabis and producer of marijuana in the 1970s and 1980s.

With the passing of Thailand’s Narcotic Act in 1979 , Thailand prohibits cannabis cultivation, with the exception of Hemp plant, used till today for clothing and other accessories production.
